Dave Hughes: What is This Silence

Alive

when trembling, at a lovers parted lips.

Electric,

     When you shiver with lust

Beautiful,

when words would damage the perfection.

Comfortable,

   when you stop trying.

Desperate,

grasping the steering wheel, afraid to go home.

Roaring,

when lovers discover they are strangers.

Wrenching.

when there is nothing left to say

Awkward.

      when someone tells the truth.

Deafening

when it is separate bedrooms .

Crushing,

when it’s balled fists, in a waiting room.

Delicate,

when you’re watch your wife sleep

Terrifying,

when you know what comes next.

Relieved.

      when your lover quits fighting.

Astonishing.

When she takes her last breath.

Grateful,

     when the hurting has ceased.
