A friend of mine recently shared an article about the question “What do you do?”, and how it can be a conversation killer because it forces us to define ourselves by our occupations. As someone who did not dream as a child of holding the career I currently have, but merely see it as a job that enables me to keep myself housed and fed while I can pursue the things I truly love, I couldn’t agree more. In fact, there are tons of much better, more defining criteria we can use to see what a person’s innermost soul actually looks like:
-
their customized ringtone
-
their chosen spirit animal
-
whether or not they find Benedict Cumberbatch attractive
-
if they’re one of those people who complain about the weather on Facebook
-
favorite condiment
-
which Spice Girl they identify with the most
-
how they really feel about cilantro
So the next time you find yourself at a social gathering making awkward conversation, don’t ask your conversation partner what they do. Try one of these questions instead, because no one wants to get stuck talking to a Posh Spice.
