Dave Hughes: The Habit of Being You

What was that word she used?

I have let you turn me over,

turn me on,

turn me inside out.

There is no sadness in forgetting,

only in my forgetting to remember.

When did we trade blowjobs and hallway fucking

for iced coffees and made beds?

I know when we gave away helpless laughter for hopeless tears,

but I  don’t recall when I stopped hearing you cry.

I turned our we’s into I’s

Because I was afraid of my me’s

And I had made a habit of being you.
