Dave Hughes: Rage

The rage comes,
like red water down an arroyo.
Unstoppable.
Out of thin air.
I stagger under its weight,
crushing,

Smashing all,
love won,
things treasured,
trust built brick by brick.
It recedes .
Leaves me empty,
Clutching my dogs throat.
Fingers fall open,
he looks in my eyes,
and licks my hand.
