Dave Hughes: Beginnings

I never wanted you to be better.

I never believed in that version.

I adored your sad, hurt eyes,

because you the saw the world as I could not.

I bought my ticket with your pain.

I relished feeling those tears on your cheeks,

as I held you close to drink in your exquisite sadness.

You were a wheeling bird,

I loved to watch you swoop and soar.

Through you, I could see, and feel, and hear.

So I built a prison with your love,

I broke your wing to keep you close,

wrapped you in my shame,

and chained your selfless heart.
